Allahabad

Where the three rivers meet.

The modern metropolitan city of Allahabad is also known as the ancient holy city of Pragyaga. Only after Mughal influence did the city become named Allahabad.

According to Hindu mythology, Sangam in Allahabad is the point where the three holiest rivers of Hinduism meet: the Ganges, the Yamuna, and the mythical, legendary, invisible Saraswati. Here, it is believed that the nectar from "Amrit Bindu" dropped, thus making the waters there magical. Every twelve years, devotees make their way to this place during the Kumbh Mela festival to take a dip in any one of the three rivers.

Not only is the Sangam a popular venue, devotees also spend time in the temples at Sangam which includes the Hanuman (the monkey god) Temple and the Mankameshwar Temple for Shiva (the god of destruction/rebuilding).
